Tradition and innovation in contemporary Anglo-American Poetry
The course focuses on Anglo-American culture and literature of the second half of the xxth century and on its historical context. Literary texts (poetry and fiction) as well as visual and performing arts will be discussed. All texts in the program witness the cultural innovations of the second half of the xxth century in the US.
The course aims at familiarizing students with major trends of American culture and with important works in different genres (fiction, essays, poetry, movies, visual arts). Students will learn how to analyze such works competently from a historical and textual perspective
At the completion of the course the student
- will have become familiar with major American historical and cultural developments, and with some major American writers and texts;
- will be able to interpret these developments in English and Italian with reference to fiction, poetry, drama and literary theory;
- will be able to contextualize and analyze texts and documents of notable complexity and historical significance and describe their cultural and linguistic peculiarities.
Preferably, students should already have taken an introductory course in American literature. However, personal interest and a good background in reading literature may be sufficient to participate usefully in this course. A fair knowledge of English (B2 or superior level) and an ability to follow complex historical and cultural arguments is also required. Erasmus students are welcome.

The course focuses on the following topics:
Tradition and Innovation in Anglo-American poetry of the second half of the 20th century.
The Beat Generation.
The revolutionary Sixties.
The interaction USA-UK in art, literature, music, fashion.
Part of the program (18 hours) will be taught by Prof. Bellini. It focuses on the contemporary American novel.
A collection of poems and other texts edited by Stefania Michelucci will be availabe in aulaweb in February 2021.

ANGLO-AMERICAN LITERATURE AND CULTURE II
The exam will be an oral exam on texts and topics discussed during the course. Students are invited to apply for individual and group presentations at the end of the course which will cover a third of the exam.
