The course provides the students with the basic knowledge of welding and bonding technologies. The structure of a join is described and the causes of the typical defects are studied. The bonded joints realisation phases are described.
The aim of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge of the special welding process, to describe in detail the defects that can be found, to analyze the main welding technologies (traditional and innovative) of metallic materials. Visits to laboratories and production facilities materialize the theoretical aspects described in class, showing students some of the working realities in which they will be able to operate after graduation. At the end of the course the students will know the basic concepts on welding and will be able to recognize the metallurgical and operational defects found. They will have the tools to establish the geometric parameters of a joint by selecting the most suitable cutting technique. Thanks to an in-depth analysis of the main welding techniques, students will have the means to select between conventional welding technologies such as the coated electrode, the submerged arc, MIG MAG and TIG welding and the most innovative ones such as plasma , the laser beam and the FSW, the one that is most suitable for the selected material and application type.
The teaching consists of lectures, during which the teacher uses video to understand the various aspects of welding and the machines principles of operation during the joint realization.
Visits to industrial plants and laboratories are also carried out, during which it is possible to watch the various stages of production and verification of the quality of the welded parts.
During the course the following topics will be discussed:
1. The welding concept
2. Defects in welding
3. Preparation of the edges
4. Welding methods

JOINT TECHNOLOGY
The exam includes an oral exam during which three questions will be asked. The first question will focus on the basic concepts of welding, the electric arc, defects and cutting and preparation of the edges. The second question will concern a traditional welding technology. The third question will concern an innovative welding technology.
Details on how to prepare for the exam and the degree of depth of each topic will be given during the lessons. The oral examination involves the discussion of three topics covered during the lectures and will have the purpose of assessing whether the student has reached a level of knowledge of the appropriate concepts, will also evaluate the ability to choose a welding process according to the type of application required.
