Solids and fluids, in engineering, are treated as continuous media, i.e. media for which a microscopic analysis that looks at the behavior of molecules, atoms and ions is not necessary, but for which it is necessary and sufficient to define fields (of velocity, pressure, deformation, etc.) which vary in time and/or space. The key equation of continuum mechanics is the Cauchy equation; solids and fluids differ in the way the stress tensor is represented in this equation.
