A Portuguese Itinerary AIMS AND CONTENT AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course will examine the variety of literary and artistic expressions in a XXth century perspective of Fernando Pessoa and the Portuguese Modernism. The course will focus on on specific topics such as the poetics of "eteronimia", and its influences on the modern aestethics . TEACHING METHODS Lectures and seminars in italian and portuguese (online). Attendance is heartily recommended. Students who are unable to attend will have to study some supplementary material SYLLABUS/CONTENT The course aims to consider the relationship between Portuguese culture and its territory and, more specifically, the role of the literary text as an implicit recognition of the mechanisms and forms that contribute to raising the territory to a factor of identity. Through a textual map made up of novels and poems, we will verify how the relationship between landscape and literature (also in its dense dialogue with the arts: painting and, in the twentieth century, photography), as well as producing an inexhaustible metaphorical arsenal, lends itself as a field of research for understanding the construction of Portuguese identity and its complex relationship with the events of its history, with its own imagination, with the cultural experience of a community that recognises itself as such. In these terms, an attempt will be made to read the Portuguese landscape in the history of literature and, more specifically, by referring to some of its most significant turning points. Teaching’s keywords: Places, Landscapes, Journeys, Cultural texts, Portuguese Literature RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY For the theoretical part, preparation of at least one of the following essays and reading of the European Landscape Convention is required (http://www.convenzioneeuropeapaesaggio.beniculturali.it/:) Bertrand Westphal, Geocritica – Reale, finzione, spazio, Roma, Armando Editore, 2009 Vittorio Lingiardi, Mindscapes – Psiche e paesaggio, Milano, Raffaello Cortina, 2017 Michael Jacob, Il Paesaggio, Bologna, Il Mulino, 2009 Gaston Bachelard, La poetica dello spazio, Bari, Laterza, 1993 At least three of the following works must be read for 6 credits.
