The course offers Nautical Engineering students the basic knowledge to work in a pleasure craft shipyard and grants a global view of the organization and of the main building technologies and techniques.
The course aims to provide knowledge of construction technology and organization of a shipyard .
The first part of the course concerns the laws and rules for pleasure craft related to the management of a shipyard and its organization, the safety of workers, the quality assurance system, the job scheduling and control.
The second part deals with technical subjects relevant to work techniques and to the general activities of the shipyard.
The student will be able to work in a shipyard, in both the technical and the production departments, and will be fully aware of the area in which he/she is requested to work and of the processes within which his/her activity falls.

Due to the wide scope of the syllabus, the course will be mostly held at school by dedicated lessons.
Examination drills are scheduled at the semester end, during which the teacher will provide examination tests with the relevant solutions.
Depending on the students number, an organized visit to a shipyard may replace one or two lessons (not more).
Shipbuilding and economics : market, demand and offer, competitiveness, price, costs for the builder, the building contract, analogies and differences between traditional shipbuilding and leisure craft shipbuilding.
Shipyard organization and production activities : shipyard layout, shipbuilding stages, pre-contractual activities, quotations, design, procurement, production, sub-contracting, project management.
Quality and Safety at work and the environment : the various concepts referred to the shipyard and to the integrated system.
The information flow : drawings and technical documents from the issue by the basic design department to the building detail; computerized management and design.
The material flow : the material storehouse, the naval workshop, prefabrication, preliminary outfitting, hull assembly; the various activities in outfitting, with a special regard to mechanical, carpentry and painting activities.
Project control : lead-time, scheduling, Gantt’s diagram, net-scheduling, the work-load, the S curve.
Main launching and hoisting system : the longitudinal launch, the dry-dock, the floating dock, the synchro-lift and the travel lift.
Sea trials, the stability test : operational methods.
