OVERVIEW

The course of Pathological Anatomy and Immunohistochemical Techniques explores the general topics concerning Pathology and in particular deals within the various diagnostic fields for pathology, specifying the role of Biomedical Laboratory Technician and Pathologist working with different types of material (from the cytological sample to the surgical sample) with the auxilium of special techniques (histochemistry and immunohistochemistry), which are often necessary for the diagnosis. In this context, the role of immunohistochemistry is explored, both from the point of view of the technical methodology and by addressing the problems associated with the preanalytical phase; the diagnostic, prognostic and predictive role in therapeutic response of immunohistochemistry is also explored and detailed.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

To acquire the notions and methodologies of histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques on normal and pathological tissues. Acquire theoretical - practical competence on the preparation of microtome specimens. Acquire notions of electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, cytofluorimetry and molecular biology.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is an oral interview. Students are provided with 3 questions concerning the various topics explainde during the course. A short time is left for the students to draw an outline on how to deal with the topic. The oral part is carried out by at least two teachers and is based on the discussion of the topics assigned at the beginning of the test. Based on the interview, the teacher can broaden the questions and refer to other topics (always part of the program).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The student has to demonstrate to have basic knowledges of the specific topics that are part of the study program, referring to the general principles of Pathological Anatomy learned during the course; theoretical competence and ability to describe the practical technical aspects are required as regards the part of technical methodologies inherent in the Pathological Anatomy laboratory.
