The course aims to provide students with the fundamental principles of soil and structural mechanics necessary for the analysis and design of major geotechnical and structural works in civil engineering.
With regard to geotechnics, the course covers the essential concepts for the study of shallow and deep foundations, rigid and flexible retaining structures, and slope stability problems.
With regard to structures, the course focuses on the displacement method for the analysis of elastic beams, the fundamentals of structural dynamics, the basic principles of stability of equilibrium, and introductory concepts of plasticity and elasto-plastic analysis of structural systems.
