AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Attending this course, the student will achieve and apply skills of: - reading and understanding about Portuguese language and literature; - making personal judgements about different ways of writing a short story. The student will also achieve learning skills of translation. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Of the three weekly hours of the Theoretical Module, two will be devoted to examining Portuguese as a language in motion, a language of colonization/contact and a language of diaspora, analyzing its various varieties and proposing a description of its phonological, morphological, lexical and syntactic structures, highlighting the particularly significant variational features, especially those that distinguish the two main varieties (European and Brazilian). One hour a week will be devoted to the analysis and translation of texts belonging to the different varieties of the Portuguese language, so as to provide a practical approach to what has been studied in the lectures. Texts will be provided from time to time by the instructor and subsequently uploaded to Aulaweb. By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of the metalanguage and of the various aspects of a descriptive-analytical model of the Portuguese language in its different varieties, in particular the European and Brazilian ones. They will be required to be able to appropriately apply this knowledge and understanding, and to possess adequate skills to formulate and support arguments, as well as to gather and interpret relevant data in order to form independent judgments, including reflection on related social, scientific or ethical issues; to communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audiences, and to have developed the learning skills necessary to pursue further studies with a high degree of autonomy. The practical module will cover the topics indicated in level A2 of the Common European Framework. During the lessons, all the thematic areas necessary for the development of linguistic, communicative and grammatical skills will be touched upon for the effective achievement of the expected level. The manual indicated in the bibliography will be accompanied by other materials gradually provided by the teacher and regularly uploaded on Aulaweb. TEACHING METHODS The lessons of the theoretical module will be mainly lecture-based, with a predominantly theoretical approach, while aiming to leave ample room for interaction between the instructor and students. One third of the course, equal to 10 hours, will be devoted to hands-on workshop activities involving the analysis and translation of texts. The lessons of the practical module will alternate frontal lessons, exercises and moments of participatory discussion, conversation and comparison. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The semester-long theoretical module (30 hours) is structured as follows: For the section on the linguistic history of Portuguese as a language in motion and the analysis of the phonological, morphological, lexical and syntactic structures of the language's main varieties (2 hours per week): History of Portuguese migrations; Lexical expansion and mutual influences in African and Asian settlements; Portuguese in Brazil: The influence of Tupi-Guarani languages; The influence of the Yoruba and Bantu dialects spoken by enslaved people. Exam Board TIZIANA TONON (President) VIRGINIACLARA CAPORALI ROBERTO FRANCAVILLA (Substitute) LESSONS LESSONS START Theoretical Module: classes will be held in the second semester. Dates and times will be communicated as soon as they are available. The practical module will begin on: Class schedule The timetable for this course is available here: Portale EasyAcademy EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION THEORETICAL MODULE: Oral exam, in Italian, lasting approximately 25 minutes, in which the student will be required to demonstrate that they have developed an organic understanding of contemporary Portuguese, answering questions on the geography, phonology, morphology and syntax of the language with the ability to synthesize and appropriate use of language. For attending students, the ongoing exercises and tests carried out during the course will also form part of the final assessment. Non-attending students are asked to contact the professor well in advance of the exam dates in order to agree on an expanded study syllabus and/or alternative written activities, which must be submitted before the oral exam. PRACTICAL MODULE: - The readership exam consists of a written test. For each exam session it will be possible to take the written exam only once. The final mark will be the reasoned average between the mark obtained in the theoretical module and that obtained in the lectureship. The exam corresponds to a total of 9 credits. ASSESSMENT METHODS The Portuguese Language I written exam will test your knowledge of grammatical rules and basic vocabulary, as well as the actual acquisition of skills relating to written production and written and oral comprehension. Only one paper is expected for each exam session. The dates of the writings will be communicated during the year and reported via Aulaweb and on the teacher's personal page: https://lingue.unige.it/carlasofia.ferreiraandrade@edu.unige.it. The oral exam for the theoretical module will assess the acquisition of the topics covered during the course. A practical-theoretical question on the translations carried out in class and on the translation strategies applied is also expected. Achievement of the intended learning outcomes will be assessed by checking, in addition to an organic understanding of Portuguese as a language of migration, the correct use of specialized vocabulary and a satisfactory qualitative level in the corresponding oral presentation. The highest grades will be awarded to those who show the ability to discuss the course topics extensively and pertinently, relating and comparing them with one another, thereby demonstrating a solid grasp of the content both on a theoretical level and in terms of specific language use. Those who show a more rote-based preparation, with limited analytical ability and an exposition that is correct but not always precise in its terminology, will receive fair/average grades. Gaps in preparation and/or improper use of language will lead to grades that will not exceed a passing mark. Gaps in preparation, inadequate language, and difficulty navigating the course materials will result in a negative evaluation. The final grade is calculated as follows: 50% (of the overall mark) for the written and oral practical part; 50% (of the overall mark) for the theoretical part.
