AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to develop students’ ability to address the design of simple civil engineering works through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates hydrological and hydraulic engineering competencies.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • understand and manage the interactions among the different disciplines involved in the design of a simple civil engineering work;
  • undertake the preliminary and detailed design of hydraulic infrastructure works, assessing their construction typology and territorial integration;
  • interpret and use the results of laboratory tests and experiments for the characterization of the hydraulic behavior of specific devices;
  • develop independent judgment and synthesis skills in solving simple design problems;
  • acquire the basic operational and methodological competencies required in the professional practice of civil engineers.

TEACHING METHODS

The course is organized in a laboratory format and involves the supervised development of design activities in the following disciplinary area:

  • Hydraulic Structures Laboratory, dedicated to the design of a hydraulic infrastructure through:
    • conceptualization and configuration of the infrastructure;
    • analysis of the main construction solutions;
    • assessment of its territorial integration and functional performance;
    • laboratory experimental activities aimed at characterizing the hydraulic behavior of specific devices (where applicable).

Working students are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and exam methods which, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take into account individual ways of learning.

Students with a certified learning disability (DSA), a disability, or other special educational needs are invited to contact the instructor at the beginning of the lessons to discuss teaching and examination arrangements that, while respecting the learning objectives of the course, take individual learning needs into account and provide appropriate accommodations.
Please also note that requests for exam accommodations or exemptions must be submitted using the form available at this link https://modulionline.unige.it/richiesta-adattamenti#no-back , to the teaching professor, the SCUOLA contact person (federico.scarpa@unige.it), and the relevant office (inclusione.studenti@info.unige.it) at least seven working days before the examination, in accordance with the guidelines available at this link https://unige.it/disabilita-dsa/richiesta-servizi

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The assessment consists of the presentation and discussion of a design project within the Hydraulic Structures Laboratory.

The design project will be subject to an individual oral examination, during which students will be required to present and discuss the design solutions adopted, the calculation methodologies employed, the results achieved, and the main assumptions made.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assessment is intended to verify the achievement of the learning objectives through the evaluation of the design project and the corresponding oral examination. In particular, the following aspects will be considered:

  • the technical accuracy of the design projects;
  • the ability to integrate both hydrological and hydraulic aspects within the design process;
  • the appropriateness of the proposed solutions with respect to regulatory, construction, economic, and environmental constraints;
  • the ability to critically analyze and justify the design choices adopted;
  • the clarity of presentation and the mastery of the subject matter demonstrated during the oral examinations.
