SEMESTER | 2° Semester |
TEACHING MATERIALS | AULAWEB |
The lectures are related to the modern metallurgy as it is applied in all aspects modern and daily life. The interaction of metallic materials with the surrounding environment (i.e. manufacturing, operating, exposed environment) is taken into account. The classes are enriched by case studies and other activies meant to sustain the curiosity and the attention of the students
This Classes are offered to students having acquired the credits of Metallurgy 1 or an equivalent one
The student learns: how to read chemical, physical and mechanical data specified in the materials datasheets; how to settle an experimental protocol for the characterization of materials and for their qualification is also a skill demanded to the student after the classes. The student should be able to select the best alloy for an application to establish the corrosion risk and the related counter strategy. The studen will have notions on corrosion and special applciations.
The student:
- learns about steel and special steels
- learns the role of alloying elements in iron base alloys and their combined function
- becomes aware of special metallurgy and methodologies
- becomes aware of additive manufacturing
- knows how to read a technical sheet about a steel and a metallic material in general
This field of knowledge is suitable for both the profiles (Materials scientist specialized in research and development & Materials scientist specialized in technologies) offered by the Master degree in Materials Science and Technology
The student shall have followed Metallurgy 1 or equivalent teaching lessons.
Lectures are mostly held in the classroom with the participation of experts. One credit of experimental activities is carried out as final experience of the teaching program. A visit to a metallurgical company is planned in the final part of the classes.
Recap on the basic knowledge on metallurgy. Strengthening methods in steels: alloying, cold hardening, ageing, secondary hardening. Effect of alloying elements on steel properties and characteristics. Detailed description of classified commercial steels: from micro-alloyed to highly alloyed steels (e.g. HSLA, maraging, duplex, weathering, micro-alloyed, Austempering). Stainless steels. Powder metallurgy. Addittive manufacturing (3D printing). Introduction to room temperature corrosion, high temperature oxidation and related electrochemical measurements.

usually at the end of February however check on the webpage of the Material Science courses.
All class schedules are posted on the EasyAcademy portal.
Oral exam: 3 questions of 10 points each
The exams is based on the discussions rising from a technical sheet about one of the steel kinds presented during the classes. The metallurgical properties, the effect of alloying elements and the practical applications are the three main topics threated during the exam.
