OVERVIEW

The 6-CFU course will present the main features of social and cultural history of Latin America. It will also analyze how Latin-American countries became part of the Western economy and culture. The course follows a thematic-chronological structure starting with the history of pre-Columbian States and ending with the authoritarian regimes of the 20th century. The 9-CFU course includes a monographic part. 

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Knowing the basic features of the history of Central and South America, from Spanish and Portuguese invasions to the end of the 20th century; studying the development of Latin-American societies in ethnic, social, cultural and territorial perspectives. Studying the basic features of the social and cultural history of Latin-American countries, from the Spanish and Portuguese invasions to the authoritarian regimes of the 20th century, through a thematic-chronological approach. 

PREREQUISITES

None.

TEACHING METHODS

Oral exam.

The 6-CFU course includes one reading laboratory; the 9-CFU course includes two reading laboratories. These activities are not specifically evaluated but there will be a written 1-hour test featuring open-ended questions, which will be an opportunity for a teacher-student confrontation. Exercises are part of the course program for attending students.

Students who take the 9-CFU course can take a mid-term written exam (3 open-ended questions, 2 hours) on the topics covered by the first part of the course (from pre-Columbian civilizations to Independence only).

Contents for students who are taking the 9-CFU course

The course will present the basic features of the social and cultural history of Latin-American countries, from the Spanish and Portuguese invasions to the authoritarian regimes of the 20th century, through a thematic-chronological approach. The monographic part of the course will focus on the theme of photography as a visual source to study migrations between Europe and Latin America.
