Given the close relationship with the Geological Sciences, it provides the basic knowledge necessary to be able to describe, model and interpret the processes that define the different natural systems in the extreme variability of environmental conditions and temporal evolution. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The aims General and Inorganic Chemistry teaching are to provide the student with basic knowledge on the structure of the matter (structure of the atom, chemical bond, states of aggregation) and on the principles that regulate the chemical equilibrium in homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, with particular attention to the reactions taking place in aqueous solutions. The teaching also includes classroom exercises, during which exercises related to the topics covered in the theoretical part of the teaching are carried out. Laboratory practices, on the other hand, aims to introduce students to laboratory activity, allowing them to learn how to carry out the most common operations correctly (handling of chemical reagents, preparation of solutions, crystallization, filtration, etc.), and to propose a concrete approach to the concepts covered in the theoretical part of the tuition. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims to provide the student with basic knowledge on the structure of matter (atomic structure, chemical bond, states of aggregation) and on the principles of chemical equilibrium in homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, with particular attention to reactions in aqueous solvent. The course therefore aims to provide the student with the indispensable tools to learn about matter and chemical reactions. The teaching includes exercises both in the classroom and in the laboratory, during which exercises and practical experiences related to the topics covered in the theoretical part of the teaching are carried out. PREREQUISITES The teaching does not require specific prerequisites at the university level. To understand the topics covered, the knowledge of mathematics and physics acquired in secondary school is sufficient. TEACHING METHODS The teaching includes lectures, classroom exercises and practical sessions in the laboratory. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Atomic structure of matter. Periodic table and periodic properties of the elements. Chemical bond. Chemical nomenclature. Chemical reactions. States of aggregation of the matter and their characteristics. Chemical equilibrium. Homogeneous and heterogeneous equilibria. Electrochemistry. Laboratory: Single-place practical exercises on the following topics: Chemical reactions in aqueous solution (acid-base, precipitation, complexation, oxide reduction). Characteristic reactions of cations and anions and their use in the separation of different ionic species simultaneously present in solution. Flame probe analysis. Inorganic qualitative analysis of an unknown mixture. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Text books of General and Inorganic Chemistry at university level can be used as reference texts, for example those mentioned below which are available, in the University Library. 1- Martin S. Students who obtain a mark higher than or equal to 18/30 can accept the mark (exam passed) or take an oral exam. In this case the final mark will take into account both the result of the written test and the outcome of the oral one. Students who fail the oral exam must repeat the exam in subsequent sessions. ASSESSMENT METHODS The written test consists of solving numerical exercises and answering to open questions and it is aimed at ascertaining the student's preparation on the concepts and formulas presented in class and in laboratory and his ability to apply these concepts and formulas to concrete problems Exam schedule Data appello Orario Luogo Degree type Note 02/02/2024 09:00 GENOVA Scritto 23/02/2024 09:00 GENOVA Scritto 18/06/2024 09:00 GENOVA Scritto 10/07/2024 09:00 GENOVA Scritto 19/09/2024 09:00 GENOVA Scritto FURTHER INFORMATION The lecture attendance is strongly recommended. Attendance is mandatory for practical sessions.
