OVERVIEW
For students attending the 9CFU examination, the course is divided in two parts of overall 60 hours. The first part is dedicated to an explanation of the medieval millennium, also with reference to two of the newest and qualified handbooks; the second part aims to connect the student with the craft of the historian and his work through the sources, with reference to four different books explained in some depth..
AIMS AND CONTENT
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Aim of the course is to build a conceptual apparatus in order to understand the original past of European civilization in the light of the most up-to-date trends in historiography, to provide a critical reconstruction of the main problems of the medieval era (fifth-fifteenth centuries) and a chronological elementary framework, useful for the understanding of historiographic models.
AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
As part of the acquisition of basic knowledge related to the 5th-15th centuries, teaching aims to orient toward
- the development of a non-generic vocabulary
- the ability to traverse the medieval millennium with appropriate questioning
- the ability to recognize the main problematic nodes
- the ability to connect the acquired notions with coeval developments in different contexts-political, social and economic, but also literary, historical-artistic, historical-architectural-of human action.
At the end of the teaching the student will be able to explain with appropriate language the main processes, dynamics, facts or key figures (either by role or relevance), with awareness of their incidence in the above-mentioned contexts.
In the 6 cfu exam, the student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired the basic knowledge and skills indicated and can deal with one of the proposed in-depth examinations. For the 9 cfu exam, deeper and more detailed knowledge, critical awareness, and further study of a chosen topic are expected.
PREREQUISITES
No specific prerequisites are required.
TEACHING METHODS
Traditional, face-to-face lecture, accompanied by slides available on AulaWeb, to facilitate understanding of what is being presented.
An analytical presentation will be provided of each of the 4 texts of choice of the student. In addition, a grid of questions is provided during the lesson that should guide the reading of a historiographical text (also available on AulaWeb, where lists of possible questions relating to each text of choice will also be deposited).
Attendance, although not compulsory, is recommended. Students who attend at least half of the lectures in attendance are considered to be attending.
For students who request this at the beginning of the course, it will be possible to follow the lectures via teams, without them being recorded: they will in any case be considered non-attending.

EXAMS
EXAM DESCRIPTION
Knowledge of the programme is tested in two alternative ways.
1) ATTENDING STUDENTS: there are two written tests in itinere, OPTIONAL, in the middle and at the end of the explanation of the general part of the course (the textbook). The written tests are valueted and the grade can be accepted or refused. Only those who have passed the first written test may also take the second one. The test of knowledge of the book(s) of choice is exclusively oral and takes place on the day of the appeal. The final grade will be the average of the results of the three tests. The exact dates of the written tests will be communicated by the lecturer during the course and also via Aulaweb.
2) NOT ATTENDING Students, STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT SUSTAINED THE IN PROGRESS TESTS OR ENROLLED IN THE PREVIOUS ACADEMIC YEARS: a written test on the general part (the textbook) is scheduled on the day of the call. You have to answer 4-5 questions of a different nature and orient yourself on a dumb map of Europe and the Mediterranean. One hour is given. The test of knowledge of the book(s) of choice is exclusively oral and takes place on the day of the roll call. The final mark will be the average of the results of the two parts of the examination.
The ability to analyse and understand a historiographical text (one or two of the four books of choice, depending on the CFU), its structure and the author's use of sources is verified ALWAYS the day of the appeal.
ASSESSMENT METHODS
As a whole, the examination will first of all include a consideration of the ownership of the language adopted and a check of the knowledge acquired both on the content of the lectures and the textbook(s) of choice. Attention will be paid to how the student shows awareness of historical processes and ability to problematically connote centuries, characters and events.
The final grade will be given in thirtieths.
