    OVERVIEW

    The Urban Design Studio aims to provide knowledge and skills about the tools by which transformations take place in the city, territory, environment and landscape, in relation to changing the characteristics and needs of society and the cultural and legislative framework.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The Urban planning design studio, developed through a research-by-design methodology dealing with a conceptual and strategic planning approach, aims to train students to understand the structural elements, policies and transformation programs of the city and the territory. The aim is to provide analytical and design tools to outline interventions based on urban regeneration and the enhancement of existing heritage; architectural and functional qualities in relation to environmental performances; and socio-economic sustainability of the development process.

    The qualifying learning outcomes are:

    • the acquisition of analytical techniques to evaluate the structural elements of contexts, settlement conditions, cultural background and socio-economic trends in order to define a reference logical framework for the project;
    • the acquisition of design sensitivity to verify the opportunity and sustainability of the project according to site-specific conditions;
    • the ability to define the dimension of the project according to current urban planning regulations and to assess the evolution of community needs, existing urban facilities, technological accessibility and future societal challenges;
    • the ability to identify the appropriate design references, through a significant collection of best-practices developed both at national and international level.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The course aims to provide knowledge and skills about the tools by which transformations take place in the city, territory, environment and landscape, in relation to changing the characteristics and needs of society and the cultural and legislative framework.

    PREREQUISITES

    The prior acquisition of the contents of the urban planning fundamentals course is required

    TEACHING METHODS

    The course will be structured in lectures and guided exercises. The first part of the course is devoted to the presentation of the cultural framework and reference methodology. The second part will present the tools and techniques of interpretation of the physical characters of contemporary reality. The final part of the course is for the illustration of the methods for the construction of the project that will be developed by groups of up to three students.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

    The Laboratory is oriented to the formation of a framework of design and instrumental references for the urban planning of the coastal context: the study area on which to develop the project consists of the coastal brownfields of Pietra Ligure (formerly Cantiere Rodriguez) and, at scale of large area, of the coastal conurbation of the western Savona coastal area. The attention will be placed on the themes of urban transformation and the regeneration of the settlement structure in the scenario of a consolidated tourism area, with high expectations in terms of urban quality and sustainability.

    The project elaboration will be preceded by a series of lectures (with related exercises) concerning the technique and urban planning and urban design (indexes and parameters for the control of the urban form, urban zoning and functions, localization of public services, design of public space, design of the residence and of the receptive function, design and sizing of road and cycle networks, nature based solutions, elements of biophilic planning and design, soil and urban green project).

    Another transversal theme of the workshop is the examination of urban planning tools. The planning system in Italy: actors, tools, processes, themes from the post-war period to today - The structural and strategic planning model - The environmental theme and planning models for sustainability - Plans and projects in Europe - Globalization and perspectives for the new Millennium - Places: Paris - London - New York - Chicago - Berlin - Amsterdam - Barcelona - Bejing - Milan - Rome. Focus on Liguria.

    The tools useful for the representation of the territory project (GIS techniques and survey with drone) are an integral part of the course. Specific lessons in 3D parametric design and BIM are provided separately.
