OVERVIEW

The course deals with the most relevant topics relating to internal combustion engines  and fluid machines. for the automotive field,

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to provide the student a basic knowledge of positive displacement and dynamic fluid machines with reference to their functional behaviour and performance characteristics

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student attendance during the lessons and related study activities will allow:

- to identify the main features of the internal combustion engines used in the different application areas;

- to know the main features related to environmental impact of internal combustion engines;

- to identify the main features of the control system of after-treatment devices.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures on the different items presented in the course programme, focusing on specific arguments developed within the course. Moreover, seminars offered by academic and industrial experts and technical visits can be organised.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Internal Combustion Engines (ICE)

  • General remarks – ICE classification, engine components, nomenclature, operational parameters – Ideal and real operation of 2 and 4 stroke engines – Reference thermodynamic cycles for SI and diesel engines – Indicated diagrams, indicated and brake mean effective pressure, engine power correlations
  • Functional problems – Combustion processes in ICE – Engine part load operation – Constant speed and constant load curves, engine performance maps – Supercharging and turbocharging
  • Operative problems –  Fuel supply circuits and advanced fuel injection systems for Spark Ignition (SI) and Diesel engines – ICE pollutant emissions – Emission control systems and aftertreatment devices (exhaust gas recirculation, catalytic converter, particulate filter) – CO2 reduction in automotive ICE – Valve control systems in ICE: Variable Valve Timing (VVT) and Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) systems

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

Lesson notes and classroom material (which can be downloaded in aulaweb) are sufficient for the exam preparation.

  • S. Marelli - “Sistemi Propulsivi a Ridotto Impatto Ambientale” – Notes to the course (in Italian).
  • G. Ferrari -  "Motori a combustione interna" - Esculapio, 2016.
