OVERVIEW

The course, comprising 30 hours of lessons, aims to develop the learners’ communicative competence in English at the B2 level of the CEFR, focusing in particular on receptive language skills (reading and listening comprehension) and metalinguistic competence. The topics covered relate to the technical-scientific area with particular regard to robotics, artificial intelligence, automation and 3D printing.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide students with a level of understanding and knowledge of the English language equivalent to B2 of the Common European Framework of References for Languages. At the end of the course students will be able to: - understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialisation. - interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. - produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Expansion of the vocabulary relating to the technical-scientific area with particular regard to robotics, artificial intelligence, automation and 3D printing.

PREREQUISITES

Communicative competence in English at a B1 level of the CEFR.

TEACHING METHODS

Interactive lessons in presence; oral exchanges in pairs and small groups.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Topics: Learning an L2 online; artificial intelligence and language learning; robotics; automation; 3D printing.

Grammar: causative structures; clauses of concession; comparatives and superlatives; the use of enough and too; modal verbs used to express ability, obligation, possibility, probability, deduction and to give advice; the infinity of purpose; fronting; future forms; future continuous; future perfect; future time clauses; inversions; participle clauses; the passive; past perfect simple and continuous; phrasal verbs; language devices to express preference; present perfect simple and continuous; conditional sentences; quantifiers; defining and non-defining relative clauses; reported speech; the use of so and such; the habitual aspect; verb patterns; the use of wish and if only.
