OVERVIEW

The course is divided into two parts: Esercitazioni di lettorato (practical translation and intepreting modules) and Modulo teorico (linguistics module, 30 hours, prof.ssa Virginiaclara Caporali) for a whole of 9 CFU.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 Attending this course, the student will achieve and apply skills of:

-reading and understanding about Portuguese language and literature;

- making personal judgements about different ways of writing a short story.

The student will also achieve learning skills of translation.

 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Of the three hours a week of Theoretical Module, two will be dedicated to the observation of Portuguese as a language in movement, a language of colonisation/contact and a language of diaspora:

* the Atlantic islands: the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores. Characteristics of occupation and linguistic peculiarities;

* marine lexicography: words related to the exploitation of the sea and nautical knowledge;

* settlements in Africa and Asia, lexical convergences and new acquisitions: the contributions of contact languages;

* Portuguese in Brazil: the languages ​​of the coast;

* Portuguese in Brazil: influence of Tupi and Bantu dialects.

One hour a week will be dedicated to the analysis and translation of the cartas dos emigrantes/cartas de chamada. The texts will be provided from time to time by the teacher and subsequently uploaded to Aulaweb.

The practical module will cover the topics indicated in level A2 of the Common European Framework. During the lessons, all the thematic areas necessary for the development of linguistic, communicative and grammatical skills will be touched upon for the effective achievement of the expected level. The manual indicated in the bibliography will be accompanied by other materials gradually provided by the teacher and regularly uploaded on Aulaweb.

 

TEACHING METHODS

The lessons of the theoretical module will mainly have a frontal character. A third of the course, equal to 10 hours, will be dedicated to laboratory activities. The lessons of the practical module will alternate frontal lessons, exercises and moments of participatory discussion, conversation and comparison.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The six-month theoretical module (30 hours) is conceived as follows:

For the linguistic history of Portuguese as a language in movement (2 hours per week):

History of Portuguese Migrations;
Atlantic Islands: the occupation of the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira;
Lexicon of navigation and exploitation of the sea;
Lexical expansion and mutual influences in African and Asian settlements;
Portuguese in Brazil;
The influence of the Tupi-Guarani languages;
The influence of Bantu dialects spoken by slaves.
For the translation part (1 hour per week):

Analysis and translation of the cartas de emigrantes and cartas de chamada.
The materials will be indicated or provided by the teacher in class and regularly uploaded to Aulaweb.

Voz activa/Voz passiva;
Participios duplos;
Haver de + infinitive, Ter de + infinitive;
oração relative indirecta;
Interrogativos with interrogative pronoun and preposition;
conditional;
Pessoal infinitive;
Prepositions and locuções prepositivas;
Clitic pronouns: contração do cd com o ci.
During the lessons, the manual indicated in the bibliography will be used together with other materials, provided by the teacher, for the development of reading, writing and oral comprehension skills.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

- For students who attend the theoretical module, an ongoing written test is foreseen, followed by an oral exam according to the calendar. Non-attending students will have to agree on a replacement exam by writing to virginiaclara.caporali@unige.it.

- The readership exam consists of a written test. For each exam session it will be possible to take the written exam only once.

- The final mark will be the reasoned average between the mark obtained in the theoretical module and that obtained in the lectureship. The exam corresponds to a total of 9 credits.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The Portuguese Language I written exam will test your knowledge of grammatical rules and basic vocabulary, as well as the actual acquisition of skills relating to written production and written and oral comprehension. Only one paper is expected for each exam session. The dates of the writings will be communicated during the year and reported via Aulaweb and on the teacher's personal page: https://lingue.unige.it/carlasofia.ferreiraandrade@edu.unige.it.

The oral exam relating to the theoretical module will verify the acquisition of the topics addressed during the course. There is also a practical-theoretical question on the translations carried out in the classroom and on the translation strategies applied. .

The final grade is calculated as follows:

50% (of the overall mark) for the written and oral practical part;

50% (of the overall mark) for the theoretical part.
