The course will study the theoretical aspects of corrosion phenomena applied to practical cases and will illustrate the main methods of prevention and protection against corrosion. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES To provide an understanding of the electrochemical foundations of corrosion mechanisms, of the methods used for the control and prevention of corrosive phenomena through the knowledge of attack morphologies and the definition of the parameters that contribute to creating critical conditions in the use of metallic materials. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Attendance and active participation in the proposed training activities (lectures, laboratory experiences) and individual study will allow the student to: - understand the fundamentals of corrosion - Know the techniques of protection, protection and control of corrosive phenomena - Evaluate completely the problems of degradation of metallic materials in contact with the external environment. - Discuss corrosion problems through initial diagnosis assessments and the main causes of phenomena PREREQUISITES For a successful learning, basic knowledge of chemistry, mathematics and physics is required, but no formal prerequisites are required. TEACHING METHODS The course includes classroom lectures and laboratory experiences aimed at encouraging the learning and discussion of specific examples of corrosion applications of metallic materials and related prevention techniques. The transversal competences in terms of autonomy of judgment will be acquired through the execution of laboratory experiences to be carried out in a group. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Electrochemical aspects of corrosion Corrosion forms and morphologies (generalized and localized, pitting corrosion, crevice, mechanochemical corrosion) Corrosion in industrial environments (petrochemical industry, offshore structures). Prevention and protection methods (cathodic protection, sacrificial anodes, metallic, inorganic and organic protective coatings) corrosion monitoring in plants Analysis of consumption, conditions of application and degradation of paints considering the diffrent corrosivity classes. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY The teaching material used during the lessons will be available in the classroom of the course, as well as the examples of final tests proposed in previous years with the related solutions. The notes taken during the lessons and the material in the aulaweb are sufficient for the preparation of the exam, but the following book is suggested as supporting and in-depth text. The writing consists of 4 open-ended questions that will be evaluated on the basis of the correctness and completeness of the answer and the correct use of the technical terminology. The written test can be repeated, but in this case the vote of the last written delivered is valid. To access the oral exam students must have passed the written test with a minimum grade of 16/30 and the grade obtained will be the average between written and oral exam. Three exam sessions will be available for the 'winter' session (January, February and during the teaching break provided by the Scuola Politenica at Easter) and 3 calls for the 'summer' session (June, July, September and during the autumn break provided by the Polytechnic School). No extraordinary appeals will be granted outside the periods indicated by the Polytechnic School, except for students who have not included in the study plan training activities in the current academic year. ASSESSMENT METHODS Details on how to prepare for the exam and the degree of depth of each topic will be given during the lessons. The written test focuses on 4 theoretical questions on general aspects of corrosion, its prevention and protection; on attack morphologies and factors influencing the selection of materials and methods of protection in a service environment. The oral examination includes questions concerning mainly corrosion forms and morphologies and methods of prevention and protection against corrosion in industrial environments. The examination aims to ascertain the ability to apply the theoretical bases to general or specific cases of technological interest and to critically analyze the problems related to corrosion. The quality of the exposure, the correct use of technical terminology and the critical reasoning ability will also be assessed.
