TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

OVERVIEW

The teaching aims to guarantee adequate knowledge and understanding of the chemical-physical phenomena that regulate the interaction of materials with the environment, making the student able to evaluate the properties and transformations of matter in an applicative manner. The student will acquire knowledge relating to the electrochemical foundations of the corrosion and protection mechanisms of metallic materials. Furthermore, the student will acquire knowledge relating to the existence of standardized tests and methods for the evaluation of the chemical-physical properties of materials (solid-liquid-gas), the results of which he will learn to insert into technical reports, useful for the interaction with specialists and technicians from other sectors, but also with non-experts. The professional graduate must be able to apply the theoretical aspects of chemical-physical phenomena to the resolution of practical problem

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching aims to guarantee adequate knowledge and understanding of the chemical-physical phenomena that regulate the interaction of materials with the environment, making the student able to evaluate the properties and transformations of matter in an applicative manner, and therefore, make an accurate choice of materials. The professional graduate must be able to apply the theoretical aspects of chemical-physical phenomena to the resolution of practical problems.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Attendance and active participation in the proposed training activities (lectures, laboratory experiences) and individual study will allow the student to:
understand the fundamentals of general chemistry, thermodynamics, kinetic and electrochemistry.

It also aims to train students in numerical calculus, through the performance of numerous exercises in class, whose ability to resolve is also required in the exam.

PREREQUISITES

For a successful learning, basic knowledge of chemistry, mathematics and physics is required, but no formal prerequisites are required.

TEACHING METHODS

The course includes classroom lectures for a total of 24 hours. The lessons are divided into theoretical parts and exercise parts. The student is given the opportunity to take a written self-assessment test at the end of each week, structured similarly to the final written exam, but limited to the program covered in the same week, with subsequent correction upon request by the students. The last two hours of class will be dedicated to a simulation of the exam, with relative correction.

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it  ), the Polytechnic School's disability liaison.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of a written test, composed of multiple choice questions, open questions and numerical exercises. Different scores will be assigned to the numerical exercises, open questions and multiple choice questions. If the score is greater than or equal to 18, the test will be passed, with a grade equal to the score obtained. The total sum of the points that can be assigned is 33, which corresponds to 30/30 with honors. If the score is less than 18, the student will have to repeat the test in any subsequent session. There are no oral tests.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam will focus on the topics covered during the lectures and will aim to assess whether the student

has achieved an adequate level of theoretical knowledge on basic chemistry

has acquired the ability to analyze widespread corrosive phenomena and propose possible anticorrosive techniques

has the ability to analyze safety data sheets to evaluate the possible danger of chemical products

has the ability to draft technical reports and reports, also with reference to regulations for the study of materials, useful for interaction with specialists and technicians from other sectors, but also with non-experts.
