OVERVIEW

The course covers basic physics related to the gravitational field (particularly the Earth system), explores wave phenomena (mechanical and electromagnetic waves), and introduces the fundamentals of electromagnetism and geometrical optics

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Introduction to gravitation, waves (both mechanical and electromagnetic waves), and geometrical optics.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student will acquire the basic skills necessary to understand the main physical phenomena related to the gravitational field, the propagation of mechanical and electromagnetic waves, and geometrical optics.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures
Exercises

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Sara Ferrando (sara.ferrando@unige.it), the Department’s disability liaison.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The program is structured into five main categories:

  1. General properties of scalar and vector fields;

  2. General properties of the gravitational field;

  3. General properties of wave phenomena and wave propagation in media;

  4. General properties of the electromagnetic field;

  5. Geometrical optics.
