The Course is meant to give an understanding of the main causes of disease and knowledge of the physiological response to cell and tissue damage. The Course gives also insights into the pathogenesis of important processes such as inflammation, neoplastic transformation, metabolic and blood related disorders
Knowledge of different aspects of general physiopathology that enable graduate students to explore or expand any field connected to this topic.
The study of the molecular mechanisms underlying cell and tissue alterations leads to the deep knowledge of pathogenetic mechanisms of diseases. This is fundamental and allows the student to form a solid cultural base and acquire the critical tools necessary for their professional training. The student will be able to recognize cellular and tissue alterations characteristic of different pathologies and to correlate the different topics of the course by using specific terminology.
The module consists of lectures delivered through multimedia presentations.
Ethiology of diseases - genetic or environmental causes of disease ( trauma - radiations -temperature) and causes of chemical origin.
Cell damage and death
General features of the innate and adaptive immune response.
The inflammatory process, mechanisms of tissue repair.
Chronic inflammation - fibrosis
General oncology: ethiology, molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis, cancer progression. Tumor classification
All the slides used during the lectures and other teaching material will be available on AulaWeb at the end of each cycle of lessons. The suggested books are available at the teacher office together with other books for further study.
Recommended texts for any further information:GM Pontieri, Elementi di Patologia generale, Piccin

EXPERIMENTAL PATHOLOGY
The students will have oral examinations
Each students will be examined about one or two chapter of the program, with questions apt to evaluate his/her knowledge and his/her ability to connect different subject of the program. The knowledge and the definitions of the basic elements must be known in order to consider the examination approved. The students will be examined about their critical interpretation of the issues object of the examination.
During the exam, the rules regarding the assessment method of DSA certified students or students with other educational needs indicated by the university will be respected. (e.g.: additional time in the case of written exams, use of concept maps to be viewed for approval by the teachers at least one week before the exam date).
Students with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.
