AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course module, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the different types of clinical studies and understand their appropriate applications

  2. Understand the structure of a scientific paper and critically evaluate published literature

  3. Recognize various types of bias, identify them in study protocols and published research, and suggest strategies for their prevention

  4. Understand the principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) in scientific research and the role of the Ethics Committee

  5. Critically assess the strength of available evidence based on the evidence hierarchy

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching methods will be blended, combining traditional lectures with interactive sessions and group activities (e.g., article analysis, use of checklists, identification of bias). The module will conclude with group presentations to the class, showcasing the results of their projects.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will be written and divided into two parts: the first will consist of multiple-choice questions, while the second will include open-ended questions requiring case analysis (e.g., identifying the type of study, recognizing potential biases, and suggesting strategies to address them).
An optional oral component may be added upon the student's request.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The multiple-choice questions will assess basic knowledge of research methodology (1 point for each correct answer), while the open-ended questions will evaluate the ability to critically analyze cases (up to 3 points for each answer). The maximum score is 31 (equivalent to a grade of 30 with honors), and the exam is considered passed with a score of at least 18/31.

The optional oral component, if requested by the student, will assess the ability to analyze, identify issues, and describe potential strategies for addressing them, using appropriate terminology. The oral exam can either improve or lower the final grade.
