OVERVIEW

The integrated course, organized in three teaching components, leads the student to a solid grounding in the knowledge of the main issues related to genetic diseases useful in the clinical and laboratory practice; it introduces to laboratory diagnostic methodologies applied to microbiology and virology, and to human and medical genetics. Moreover, the integrated course will provide the basic competences to understand the information infrastructures in use in large hospitals.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Acquire elements of genetics, in particular: • mitosis and meiosis • genetic meaning • Mendel's laws: segregation, independent assortment • sex chromosomes • linkage and recombination • mapping by calculating recombination frequencies. Acquire knowledge of special medical genetics applied to the clinic, heredity and gene alterations. Know molecular biology techniques and applications

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written exam, with both open and multiple choice questions, covering the topics of the different modules. In order to pass the examination the student has to reach a passing grade of at least 18/30. The total amount of time allowed for the examination is around 90 minutes.

Students enrolled in other universities or other degree courses who are only required to sit for some of the sub-sections must achieve an average passing grade, depending on the number of subsections.

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak with both the instructor and the Department’s disability liaison officer.

In relationship to the evolution of the COVID19 pandemic, the exam may be transformed in an oral examination through a web platform provided by Unige. Please refer to AulaWeb for any specific communication regarding this important issue.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Students are assessed by the final exam aiming at ensuring that they have actually reached the required level of knowledge in all the modules (see specific sections for details).

In order to pass the examination and to reach a mark of at least 18/30.
