The lectures will introduce the tipical materials used in industrial technologies with a main focus on metals and alloys. The course will also examine some applications for material involved in emerging electrochemical technologies and metal degradation processes with related protection methods. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The aim of the module is to introduce the students to the fundamentals aspects of material science and to explore some related technologies relevant in the field of industrial technologies. Ferrous and non ferrous alloys constitute a focus of the course considering their production, properties e testing methods. The technologies treated during the course are those related to processes and post-production treatments, electrochemical energy generators and to the corrosion and corrosion protection of metals. . AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aim at the comprehension of the main aspects involved in material science introducing the following topics: Foundaments of electrochemistry: Eq. Di Nernst, galvanic cells, elettrolysersi, faraday law. Electric generators: Volta and Daniell batteries, concentration batteries, Lead acid batteries, Li-ion batteries, alcaline batteries, metal hydride batteries, fuel cells, exercises. Thermodinamic of metal extraction and processes: minerals, unit operations, metal reduction, Hellingam diagram, cast iron production and steeel refinement, steel types, aluminium and aluminium alloys, copper and copper alloys. Heterogeneous equilibria: Gibbs law, single component equilibrium (water), two components equilibrium, vapor pressure, Raoul law, main bynary equilibria diagrams. Mechanical properties of materials/metals and relation with the atomic structure Ferrous and non ferrous alloys. Fe_C equilibrium diagram. Main thermal treatments and TTT, CTT curves. Designation of steel. Corrosion and corrosion protection of metals PREREQUISITES There are no prerequisite but a solid base on chemistry as those of the course of Element of chemistry is advised TEACHING METHODS frontal lectures Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it ), the Polytechnic School's disability liaison.
