OVERVIEW

The course introduces students to the main principles and institutions of Navigation Law and provides the specialist legal knowledge required for subsequent courses within the Master’s degree programme.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to introduce the students to the knowledge of the basic rules concerning the shipping field through the analysis of international, EU and national legislation and contracts, including specific focus on some items such as maritime property, maritime zones and Flag and Coastal States’ rights, administrative regime of the ship, sea areas and powers of the States, liability of the shipowner, safety and security, maritime contracts, etc.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will have acquired the necessary knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of the Maritime and Shipping Law. In particular, they will be able to use their knowledge and understanding in order to understand legal issues and draw their own conclusions. In addition, the acquisition of appropriate legal language will enable students to discuss the legal issues investigated clearly and precisely. Finally, they will have developed adequate learning skills that will allow them to develop and implement autonomously what they know.

 

PREREQUISITES

No prerequisites are required.

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of 72 hours of frontal lectures in Italian.
Attendance is highly recommended.

Students holding a certification pursuant to Italian Law No. 104 of 5 February 1992, a disability certificate, or a diagnosis of Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), who have submitted the relevant documentation to the University’s Student Inclusion Services for students with disabilities and SLD, may request compensatory tools and/or reasonable accommodations. Requests must be submitted for each examination through the “Request for Accommodations” form, available online on the dedicated University webpage, at least seven working days prior to the examination date. The use of the requested tools and/or accommodations is subject to the lecturer’s authorization.

Slides and lecture notes prepared by the teacher are available on the Aulaweb.
The course material, which is specific to each syllabus, i.e. 9 CFU (students of Economics) and 6 CFU (students of Engineering), is essential for the preparation of the exam by non-attending students as well as being a useful aid for attending students.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The final oral examination in Italian assesses students’ knowledge of the entire program.
Attending students can take the exam by passing two intermediate written tests that will take place respectively towards the middle and at the end of the course.

Students with disabilities, SLD or SEN
Students with disabilities, with SLD or with SEN are reminded that, to request exam accommodations, they must first upload their certification to the University website at servizionline.unige.it in the “Students” section. The documentation will be checked by the University’s Services for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities and with SLD.
At the beginning of the course, students are advised to contact the lecturer to agree on exam arrangements which, while respecting the learning objectives of the course, take individual learning needs into account.
To request compensatory tools or dispensatory measures, students with disabilities or SLD must fill in the dedicated Webform available at https://unige.it/disabilita-dsa, at least 7 working days before the exam.
Students with SEN may instead send their request by e-mail to the lecturer, copying the Department Representative, Prof. Elena Lagomarsino, at inclusione.economia@unige.it and the Inclusion Office at inclusione.studenti@info.unige.it.
Requests from students will be assessed by the lecturer and may be approved or rejected.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam aims to verify students’: learning skills in terms of knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of Maritime and Shipping Law; their ability to understand legal issues and draw critical conclusions; their capacity to express ideas and concepts in appropriate legal language.
