Career opportunities

The Master's degree in Marine Biology and Ecology can work autonomously in all areas that deal with the study, management, monitoring and conservation of marine biodiversity (at all levels of complexity) and marine ecosystems in relation to abiotic forcing and human activities. Graduates may continue their studies with a PhD and may enrol in the Professional Register of Biologists section A, to carry out activities that also involve the use of advanced study and monitoring methodologies. The companies and public or private entities in which he/she may be employed include Marine Protected Areas, environmental protection agencies, coastal parks, ministries and non-governmental agencies, research laboratories, coastal environment monitoring companies, fishing and aquaculture management cooperatives, educational institutions and environmental education and outreach organisations.

Did you know that...

You will be able to carry out internships for thesis purposes at Liguria's Protected Marine Areas, CNR-ISMAR and the Aquarium of Genoa, as well as a large number of DISTAV's research laboratories

.

You will deepen your knowledge of the systematics, diversity and biology of marine organisms with a look at their adaptations in all marine ecosystems

.

Graduating in Marine Biology and Ecology in Genoa

The Master's Degree in Marine Biology and Ecology in Genoa is based on a multidisciplinary Department historically dedicated to the study of marine sciences with a strong territorial connection. The degree stems from the need to train highly qualified and specialised figures, capable of dealing with the consequences that climate change and human activities have on marine biodiversity and the integrity of marine habitats with a multidisciplinary approach that integrates the more strictly biological and ecological-managerial fields.

The training course

The objective of the course in Marine Biology and Ecology is to train specialists in the study, management, monitoring and conservation of marine biodiversity and ecosystems, also in relation to the commercial use of resources (food, health, etc.).

Particular emphasis is placed on the study of marine biodiversity, in all its dimensional components, in all environments, and in its historical and relational development. The applicational aspects of marine biology (including Blue Technologies, statistics and regulatory aspects) are also extensively covered, to develop project skills in the monitoring, management and conservation of marine ecosystems, as well as skills related to the management of aquaculture facilities, aquariums and marine protected areas.
