Why

Materials science is an old science. If you think about it, it is materials science that enabled man a few millennia ago to work with stone, bronze, iron, glass. Think about architecture, works of art. An artist is also a bit of a materials scientist. In the 20th century, evolution in the field of production and use of new materials has taken on rhythms and dimensions never seen before. And new materials accompany and drive economic development. These are plastics, semiconductor materials, ceramics, new magnetic materials. Materials made by chemists and physicists in materials science laboratories.

It has been estimated that in countries with advanced economies, activity in the field of innovative materials--including electronic, magnetic, optical, for energy, catalytic, and environmental uses--contributes directly or indirectly to form about 30 or even 40 percent of a nation's wealth.

Materials science is not only the science of the present. It is also the science of the future. Many argue that the knowledge economy we are creating will be based on information technologies and bio- and nano-technologies. Behind these big words are new materials, new preparation and characterization techniques in an integrated approach in which different skills - of chemists, physicists and engineers - merge and enrich each other.

What will you study

You will have solid foundations of chemistry, physics and mathematics to put into practice immediately in the laboratory, where you will learn how to manipulate the molecules of which all matter is made. You will then have a thorough understanding of the nature and properties of a wide variety of materials.

Many of the courses involve laboratory activities. And the final exam includes a period of internship or apprenticeship in a company or research organization to put you immediately in touch with the world of work and introduce you to the most innovative fields and new frontiers of research.

The stage is a time-limited and sometimes paid practical fieldwork experience at public and private entities or facilities that have entered into specific agreements and conventions with the university. During the course of study, all students may undertake an in-company experience in order to gain an insight into the world of work. It often becomes a crucial moment of encounter between job seekers and job providers.
