The course in brief

Presentation

The Nautical Engineering Course aims to train a professional figure who possesses, in addition to a solid basic training, specific and in-depth knowledge in the areas of naval engineering and design. The nautical engineer must be able to understand, analyze and verify the designs of pleasure craft, as well as test, manage and direct the installation and maintenance of equipment on yachts and mega yachts.

Learning by doing

Frontal lectures in which students are introduced to the theoretical foundations of each course are complemented by:

- instructional workshops in nautical design and experimentation;

- internships at shipyards, engineering firms, classification/supervisory bodies;

- design of a boat as a thesis;

- conferences and workshops in boating;

- university regattas.

Professional outlets

Employment at shipbuilding, repair, and refitting yards for ships and pleasure boats, classification institutes and supervisory bodies, technical design and appraisal firms, and companies and operators in the marine industry.

What you will learn

  • Basic subjects

    The undergraduate education of the marine engineer begins with the acquisition of the fundamentals of mathematical calculus, physics and general chemistry.

  • Naval Architecture

    Study of the geometry and hydrostatic and hydrodynamic principles of a floating body. Photo 3

  • Shipbuilding

    The different types of boats, materials and construction methods, and criteria for structural sizing of hulls are presented. Photo 4

  • Naval Facilities

    Study of the components and configuration of propulsion systems, hull services, and auxiliary machinery. Photo 5

  • Applied industrial design

    You will learn the aesthetic and design principles of boats within 24 meters, using all the most commonly used tools (from hand-drawn graphical representation to the use of 3D modeling). Photo 6

  • Related courses in engineering

    The nautical engineer's technical education is supplemented with courses in structural analysis, electrical engineering, computer and machine science, and technical physics. Photo 7

Did you know that.

  • Nautical Engineering is a unique degree program in the country and, because of the way it is configured, unique even in Europe!
  • More than 90 percent of our graduates go on to pursue a master's degree in Yacht Design and upon completion of their bachelor's degree find employment in major shipyards and technical firms in the industry.
  • At the 'G. Marconi' students, faculty and staff are united by their passion for boating. Throughout the year it is possible to participate in workshops, lectures, construction and refitting of boats designed by our students.
  • Our students in the past formed a crew and participated in the university regatta 'One Thousand and One Sail' winning the 2012 edition! Photo 8
  • Italy has been a world leader in the superyacht sector (over 30 meters in length) since 2008 and has always been in the top 3 places in the world for the production of small and medium-sized boats.

Contents

Design of recreational boats within 24 meters both scientifically and technologically and aesthetically.

The nautical designer must possess professional skills in the subject areas typical of Naval Engineering in addition to an equally solid background in architectural composition and design applied to the nautical sector.

What does it mean to design a boat?

.

At the end of the training course, the student demonstrates mastery of all the necessary skills (naval construction, naval architecture, ship statics, ship systems, design) by submitting the design of a boat within 24 meters as thesis work. This work is possible with the cooperation of the lecturers of the five areas above who will test the student's ability to conceive and present the project according to the criteria of stability, proportioning, strength, plant and design.

Welcome to the website of the Bachelor of Science in Nautical Engineering program! Since 1990 we have been training designers for recreational boating in an engaging environment, strongly committed to providing education geared to the needs of the industry with which our university campus also collaborates intensively in research. Studying at the University Campus 'G. Marconi' of La Spezia will allow you to be part of an environment where passion for boating is the unifying factor for students, faculty, researchers and all campus staff. of all together with your peers and faculty in an environment where passion for boating.
