TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

OVERVIEW

The course introduces the student to the world of composite materials, analyzing the materials that compose them and the techniques necessary to produce them.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge of composite materials, to describe in detail the types of matrices and existing reinforcements, to analyze the main technologies used to make composite materials. Visits to laboratories and production facilities materialize the theoretical aspects described in class, showing students some of the working realities in which they will be able to operate after graduation.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The goal of the course is to provide the students with the basic knowledge of the different types of composite
materials. The description of the main technologies used to produce short and long fibers reinforced
composites follows. The tests and the controls used to characterize the composites are described. The
course is completed with the description of the joining techniques.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching consists of lectures, during which the teacher uses video to understand the various aspects of composites and the method of operation of the machines during the composite realization.

Visits to industrial plants and laboratories are also carried out, during which it is possible to watch the various stages of production and verification of the quality of the composite parts.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Mechanical and thermal characteristics of CMC, MMC and PMC are described, referring to the standards. The description of the technologies used to produce composites with different kinds of matrixes and/or different types/geometries of reinforces follows. The course continues analyzing the main destructive controls used to verify the quality of a composite. The bonding techniques to realize structural joints are described.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam includes an oral exam during which three questions will be asked.

The first question will focus on the basic concepts of composites, the matrix and the reinforcement classification.

The second question will concern a composite production technology or a destructive test.

The third question will concern bonding technology.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Details on how to prepare for the exam and the degree of depth of each topic will be given during the lessons.

The oral examination involves the discussion of three topics covered during the lectures and will have the purpose of assessing whether the student has reached a level of knowledge of the appropriate concepts, will also evaluate the ability to choose a composite according to the type of application required.
