Overview

The Course in brief

Presentation

The Master's Degree Course in Materials Science and Technology is strongly interdisciplinary among the sectors of chemistry, physics, and engineering relevant to the study and use of materials. It predicts many laboratory activities and a thesis carried out either at research groups or at local companies.

There are two curricula: one in Italian dispensed in Genoa and one in English language of a path of international mobility and awarding of multiple qualifications.

Learn by doing

You will learn how to use scientific and technological instrumentation for the synthesis and characterisation of materials for specific applications thanks to the laboratory activities foreseen in different courses and the Thesis activity. This may focus on both fundamental and applied topics related to research activities in Genoa, eventually in collaboration with local companies, or present in the consortium centres for the international curriculum.

Professional outlets

The course trains graduates who are specialists in research and/or technology and who are able to take up positions of responsibility and/or research in the areas of quality control and quality assurance, design and production of materials and modelling of their properties. Graduates can also be able to continue their studies with a PhD in Materials Science or related disciplines.

What you will learn

Condensed matter physics

Structures of solids: thermal, electronic and optical properties

Physics for materials

Nanostructures and materials for energy, photonics and electronics

Physical Chemistry

General Training Objectives

  • You will acquire strong interdisciplinary skills in chemistry, physics and engineering to allow you a quick placement in companies.  You will contribute to the solution of problems related to the development, production and quality control of materials.
  • You will get specific skills in one or more of the following segments: polymeric and metallic materials, innovative and nanostructured materials, energy materials and devices, materials for biomedical applications.

Course description

  • In the first year most of the compulsory teaching is provided. With activities in class and laboratory, you will achieve an advanced and integrated training of chemistry and physics of solid materials, quantum physics and physical chemistry, aimed at understanding the correlation between structure and properties of materials.
  • Both compulsory and optional courses are offered in the first or second year.  You will achieve knowledge and skills in advanced production and manufacturing technologies, instrumental preparation and characterisation methods, and material property simulation methods.
  • Thanks to the wide choice of optional subjects and with the thesis you will deepen your education in various directions: metals and alloys, polymers for electronics, materials and devices for energy, sustainable development and photonics. Also you will be able to study interaction of materials with photons and electrons.
