AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The courseof History of Medieval Art aims to provide students with a historical panorama of the arts of Western and Byzantine Europe between the early Christian age and the beginning of the fourteenth century AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course of History of Medieval Aart aims to offer an historical panorama of the artistic production in the area of Western and Byzantine Europe between the beginnings of the 4th and the end of the 14th century (about 313-1400, from the age of Constantine to the International Gothic), with extensive references to the art of Islamic civilization. The aim of the course is to make students aware of: the characters and functions typical and specific of artistic production over the centuries that are called the "Middle Ages"; the role played by the arts in the periods and geographical areas mentioned above, as well its relationship with other aspects of political and social dialectics, culture, mindsets and religious beliefs and practices. In addition to such knowledge, the course aims to provide students with individual skills that allow them to read the various medieval artistic artifacts in their material and technical nature, in their general and specific meaning, in their value as "media" in a complex and articulated society. TEACHING METHODS Frontal lessons with use of projections and powerpoints; itinerant lessons (guided tours) to the main places and buildings of Medieval Genoa. The images will be available to the students: on the PC of the classroom where the lessons will take place; during the teacher's reception time. The student is invited first to present and discuss a topic, a problem, a work of art of his choice (within the programme); the Commission will then invite him to recognise, identify and place chronologically one or more works of art (among those available on manuals and texts in adoption) and/or to treat a theme, a problem, a concept, a phenomenon, an artifact or a typology of artifacts, an artist, a field, always within the programme. Each student will come to the exam with his/her own manuals and other textbooks, as well as images in USB flash drive) ASSESSMENT METHODS The exam is oral, with the use of the images from the textbooks and of those used in lessons, made available to students. The assessment concerns knowledge and skills. The ability to answer in adherence and coherence with the proposed question and the specific knowledge of the topics dealt with are to be verified; The possession of specific language skills; The ability to read and decode images. According to the degree of attainment of such knowledge and competences, the votes above the sufficiency (18) will be assigned.
