OVERVIEW

The first part of the course retraces the main events of the history of contemporary art chronologically by analysing the main artistic movements, personalities and works of art that have characterised art from Neoclassicism to nowadays; the second part consists of an in-depth study of a particular theme of figurative culture in the 20th century; the third part consists of seminars and aims to give students specific instruments for the study of art in the second half of the 20th century.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The “History of Contemporary Art” course aims to give students an in-depth knowledge of the artistic events of the last two centuries from Neoclassicism to nowadays by carefully examining its historical dynamics and specific issues with particular reference to 20th century events.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide students with the methodological tools useful for a correct understanding of the main artistic phenomena of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, through a detailed analysis of the currents, artists and works. The second module aims to provide the student with the methodological tools to understand the complexity of the cultural dynamics that characterize the artistic trends of the second half of the twentieth century up to the present day. The third module aims to provide the student with the critical skills to know and interpret a particular period in the context of the figurative culture of the nineteenth or twentieth century.

At the end of the course, the student must be ale to accurately illustrate the lines of development of 19th and 20th century art with an appropriate lexicon; he must be able to autonomously construct paths of meaning, in both thematic and problematic terms, between the various movements in the aforementioned centuries. Finally, he must be able to critically interpret the works in relation to the historical and cultural context that produced them.

Lectures with projection of images and multimedia support materials.

Field trips and meetings with specialists in the field.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written and oral exam.

In case of extension of the health emergency, the exam will take place only in oral form via teams.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam which is both written and oral aims to assess knowledge of the main movements and artists from neoclassicism to nowadays with particular critical reflection on 20th century art.

The written exam deals with the first part of the course (6 cfu) and consists of open questions on topics covered by the programme.
