TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

OVERVIEW

The course is aimed at providing the basic concepts and tools of linear algebra and analytic geometry. It is a first semester course of the first year which introduces concepts that will be used in many subsequent courses.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student must learn the concept of number of solutions of a mathematical problem, must know how to work with complex numbers vectors and matrices, including their diagonalization, must be able to solve equations and linear systems, must know how to make a change of coordinates in the plane and in space, as well as knowing how to solve simple problems concerning lines, planes, spheres, circles and conic sections.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide basic concepts of linear algebra and analytic geometry, developing a "scientific" approach to study and an ability to use the tools provided to solve problems.
The student is expected to reach the ability to understand the text of an exercise / problem, set solutions through appropriate tools (chosen from those provided in the course), solve exercises / problems in a "non-mechanical", reasoned, autonomous way and express results and conclusions clearly and precisely.

PREREQUISITES

Basic mathematical knowledge acquired in high school

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures will be devoted to developing the theoretic part of the course, as well as to solving problems aimed to a better understanding of the theory. There will be additional hours (tutorato) devoted to discussion of exercises suggested by the lecturer.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Sets. Complex numbers and polynpmials. Analytic geometry in 2 and 3 - dimensional space. Linear systems, matrices, gaussian elimination, rank and determinants. Vector spaces, homomorphisms and diagonalization. Spectral Theorem.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written test consisting of some exercises to be solved of the type seen during the course and possible oral test. Details will be communicated on Aulaweb.

Students with DSA certification ("specific learning disabilities"), disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination methods that, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take account of individual learning arrangements and provide appropriate compensatory tools.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam verifies that the student has acquired the required skills, and knows how to use and express them in correct terms. In particular, it will assess the ability to solve exercises relating to the main topics covered in the course, with adequate explanations on the procedure and a clearly expressed conclusion.
