Final project

What it is

To be admitted to the Master’s Degree Final Examination, students must have obtained all the foreseen credits, except those related to the final examination itself.

The Master’s Degree final examination consists in a discussion in English language of an activity carried out by the student under the guidance of one or more supervisors, of which at least one must be a member of the Degree Program Board and teacher of a teaching unit offered by the Degree Programme, and the control of a co-supervisor.

The activity consists in: (i) carrying out independently a significant project, of theoretical, computational, or experimental value; (ii) producing a clear and effective document in English describing the project and the results obtained.

The discussion is an examination with questions and evaluation by the committee and takes place in the period between the submission of the final project and the proclamation, on a date to be determined according to the commitees's commitments and the number of candidates.

The official dates correspond to the proclamation, i.e. the official conclusion of the course of study, which could be on a different day from the discussion with the awarding of the degree and the communication of the grade achieved.

Evaluation

The final examination is passed if the candidate has obtained a mark of not less than 66/100 points.

The final examination is passed if the candidate has obtained a mark of not less than 66/100 points. The calculation of the mark depends on the year of first enrolment in the course of study.

When did you first enrol on the course?

The grade for the final examination is calculated as follows:

  • one mark out of thirty is assigned to the activity performed;
  • a basic mark is calculated, obtained from the average - weighted on the credits - of the examination marks of the teaching units and the mark assigned to the activity carried out;
  • a grade of 30 cum laude is worth 31;
  • the score is converted into a mark out of 110;
  • to this basic mark an increment in the range [0.4] is also added on the basis of a short presentation, in which the ability to make the results obtained accessible is an assessment element;
  • if the score obtained is greater than or equal to 110/110, the Graduation Committee may grant honours.

In the final examination, or defence of the thesis, a committee will evaluate the thesis and award marks (up to 10 points) based on the quality of the work (up to 6 points), writing style (up to 2 points) and presentation (up to 2 points).
