For 2025-2026, the following workshops will be activated:

Laboratory of environmental and funerary archaeo-entomology (FLEA) - Prof. Stefano Vanin

1 CFU

Period: 1st and 2nd semester (the workshop is always active)

Lecturer: Stefano Vanin

Starting time and hours: will be agreed with the participants after an interview

Learning methods: The workshop will be held in person and can accommodate 3 students. Attendance is required for work blocks of no less than 2 hours.

Where: the workshop will take place at the DISTAV premises, located in the Palazzo delle Scienze (Corso Europa, 26 - 7th floor)

Contents: the workshop will focus on the triage and identification of insects from archaeological excavations (mainly from crypts and tombs) relating to contexts dating between the 15th and 19th centuries.

ASTRALAB Rural and Landscape Archaeology and History - Prof. Anna Stagno

Three-year degree course in Conservation of Cultural Heritage

Mode: in presence. To enrol send an email to the mailbox anna.stagno@unige.it starting from 1st September, taking care to indicate as subject "ASTRALAB ENROLLMENT" and to specify first name, surname, matriculation, course of study, curriculum, year of course. A presentation of the Laboratory's activities is planned for September.

At the AstraLab - Laboratory of Archaeology and Rural and Landscape History of DAFIST  it is possible to carry out practical activities related to the research and projects on environmental archaeology and history and rural and landscape archaeology and history underway in the European mountains. Sources and methods of rural and landscape history and archaeology will be explored through educational outings, seminars and workshop activities. The surface reconnaissance (lasting one day) will alternate with workshop activities dedicated to the analysis of current and historical cartography on a GIS platform, re-elaboration of documentation and excavation and reconnaissance data, analysis of finds, consultation of archives of field surveys and private archives held at the LASA and the LASA library.

Participation in 25 hours of workshop activities or 15 hours of workshop activities and the writing of a paper on the work carried out will allow the acquisition of 1 CFU.

Where: at the LaBB (Laboratorio di Paletnologia e Archeologia Medievale "Luigi Bernabò Brea"), located in the courtyard between Via Balbi 2 and 4.

Methods: in presence. Two different types of activities will take place in the workshop:

1) in relation to Greek materials from excavations at Hipponion (VV) and Roman materials from excavations at Luni (SP):

  • drawing archaeological artefacts
  • digital acquisition of artefact drawings on transparencies
  • classification and indexing of artefacts processing and implementation of material sheets

2) in relation to data from the Pretoriate Survey (systematic and intensive reconnaissance in Locride, RC):

  • georeferencing of Topographical Units in GIS environment
  • informatization of Topographical Unit cards
  • archiving of photographic documentation of Topographical Units and artefacts
  • digital 3D restitution and reconstruction

Any other activities will be specified in the workshop.

The number of participants in the workshop is limited (maximum 10 enrolled for each of the two activities). To enrol send an e-mail to antonino.facella@unige.it starting from 1 February, indicating "LABORATORY ENROLLMENT" in the subject line and specifying your name, surname, matriculation number, course of study, curriculum, year of course and whether you wish to participate in activity 1 or 2. Where: the workshop will take place partly at Villa Cambiaso and partly at Balbi 4.

Contents: the Archaeological Survey Workshop (LaRA) focuses on the theme of metric survey and its digitalisation, with application to the specific archaeological context. The aim, in direct correlation with the course 'Geomatics for Archaeology', is to provide students with the basic skills to design a survey campaign, acquire the data in the field and finally post-process them in the form of metrically reliable three-dimensional models.
