Workshops

Each workshop is valid for the acquisition of 1 CFU.

For 2024-2025 the following labs will be activated:

Laboratory of environmental and funerary archaeo-entomology (FLEA) - Prof. Stefano Vanin

Start and Times: will be announced as soon as possible

Teaching Mode:The workshop will be conducted in presence and can accommodate 3 students. Attendance is required for blocks of work of not less than 2 hours.

Where: The workshop will take place at the DISTAV premises, located in the Science Building (Corso Europa, 26 - 7th floor)

Contents: the workshop will focus on the triage and identification of insects from archaeological excavations (mainly from crypts and tombs) related to contexts framed between the 15th and 19th centuries.

ASTRALAB Rural and Landscape Archaeology and History - Prof. Anna Stagno

Lecturers: Anna Maria Stagno, supported by Adele Repetto (PhD student), Giulia Bizzarri (PhD student), Caterina Piu (PhD student) 

Start: First semester 15 October 2024; second semester 20 February 2025

Timetable: Subsequent meeting times will be agreed with the students.

Methods: in presence. To enrol send an email to the mailbox anna.stagno@unige.it starting from September 1st, taking care to indicate as subject "ASTRALAB ENROLLMENT" and to specify surname, matriculation, course of study, curriculum, year of course. A presentation of the Lab's activities is planned for September.

At the AstraLab - Laboratory of Archaeology and Rural and Landscape History of DAFIST  it is possible to carry out practical activities related to the ongoing research and projects on environmental and rural archaeology and history and landscape in the European mountains. Sources and methods of rural and landscape history and archaeology will be explored through educational outings, seminars and workshop activities. The surface reconnaissance (lasting one day) will alternate with workshop activities dedicated to the analysis of current and historical cartography on a GIS platform, re-elaboration of documentation and excavation and reconnaissance data, analysis of finds, consultation of archives of field surveys and private archives in the LASA and the LASA library.

Participation in 25 hours of workshop activities or 15 hours of workshop activities and the writing of a paper on the work carried out allow 1 CFU to be acquired.

Laboratory of Classical Archaeology - Prof. Antonino Facella

Where: at LaBB (Laboratorio di Paletnologia e Archeologia Medievale "Luigi Bernabò Brea"), located in the courtyard between Via Balbi 2 and 4.

Mode: in presence. The workshop has a limited number of participants (maximum 6 enrolled). To enrol, please send an email to antonino.facella@unige.it starting from 1 February, taking care to indicate "LABORATORY ENROLLMENT" in the subject line and to specify your first name, surname, matriculation number, course of study, curriculum, course year. The first six applicants will be admitted.

The laboratory will carry out activities for the classification of Roman materials from the excavations in Luni (SP) and activities for the documentation, archiving and processing of excavation and reconnaissance data relating to archaeological research in Cifali (Chiaramonte Gulfi, RG), consisting of:

  • informatisation of Stratigraphic Unit and Topographical Unit cards
  • archiving of photographic documentation of Stratigraphic Units, Topographical Units and finds
  • matrix processing, subdivision into phases and periodisation
  • .
  • drawing archaeological artefacts
  • digital acquisition of artefact drawings on transparencies
  • classification and cataloguing of artefacts, processing and implementation of material sheets
  • .
  • any other activities, which will be specified in the workshop

Laboratory of Christian and Medieval Archaeology - Prof. Fabrizio Benente

Post-excavation laboratory activities (processing and digitisation of excavation archives) and activities for the classification and study of medieval and post-medieval finds relating to investigations carried out at the following sites Andora, Borgo Castello (SV), Luni (SP), San Nicolò dell'Isola (Sestri Levante-GE), Oratorio Mortis e Orationis (Monterosso, SP), Abandoned Village of Pian dei Costi (Borzonasca, GE), Castrum Rapallini (Rapallo, GE).

Laboratory of Archaeological Research Methodologies - Prof. Silvia Pallecchi

Mode: in presence. To enrol send an email to the email address fabio.negrino@unige.it, taking care to indicate as subject "LABORATORY ENROLLMENT" and to specify surname, matriculation number, course of study, curriculum, year of course. Priority is given to second and third year Cultural Heritage students, and especially to those who have already taken courses in "Prehistory and Protohistory" or "Palethnology".

Maximum number of enrolled students: 10

Activities will include the arrangement, drawing and study of prehistoric artefacts, especially lithic artefacts.

The course will be held in the following areas
Field trips or visits to sites, collections and museums could also be part of the workshop activities.

Laboratory of Archaeological Survey (LARA) - Prof. Domenico Sguerso and Prof. Silvia Pallecchi

Start and Times: to be determined 

Where: the workshop will take place partly at Villa Cambiaso and partly at Balbi 4.

Contents: the Archaeological Survey Laboratory (LaRA) focuses on the subject of metric survey and its digitisation, with application to the specific archaeological context. The aim, in direct correlation with the course 'Geomatics for Archaeology', is to provide students with the basic skills to design a survey campaign, acquire the data in the field and, finally, post-process them in the form of metrically reliable three-dimensional models.
