Final project

What it is

The thesis is a written paper on a mathematical topic that you will prepare under the supervision of a professor, with whom you can agree on the topic according to your interests. You can choose to write it in Italian or English.

You will also have the opportunity to do your Master's thesis by developing a project on a problem proposed by a company or by collaborating directly with company research teams on topics of interest to them. In this case, the academic supervisor may be joined by an external expert.

The initial objective of the final examination is to test your ability to produce a paper on advanced topics in the subject areas of mathematics. In order to test your ability to present these topics clearly and with mastery, the final examination consists of two stages:

  • A discussion in front of a panel of experts
  • A concise presentation of the thesis (maximum duration: 20 minutes) before a committee, followed by any questions.

What to do to graduate

If you are an undergraduate, you must:

  1. Choose the degree session
  2. Enter the title of your thesis (if required for your degree programme)
  3. Fill out the degree application online
  4. Fill out AlmaLaurea questionnaire online
  5. Return the books to the library, if you’ve borrowed any
  6. Fill out the questionnaire for assessment of the didactic activity to evaluate your study course
  7. Upload your degree thesis via the Carica Tesi

Remember:

  1. Check that you are current on your tax payments
  2. Pay the tax of € 46 for the issuance of the degree diploma via Servizio di Pagamento UniGePay 2.0
  3. Check that you have completed all your exams and training activities and ensure that these are all recorded on your online career within 15 days of your graduation

Co-supervisor and submission of the thesis

You must

  1. complete the Mathematics Master’s Degree Form to request a co-supervisor and expert examiner at least 60 days before your graduation date. To access the form, you must use your Office 365 credentials
  2. upload the thesis file in PDF format via the Upload Thesis by the day before the official date stated in your degree application (if the degree examination session spans several days, the date of the first day of the session shall apply).
The upload must be approved by your supervisor. Instructions are available in this Thesis Upload Guide.
  3. send a copy of your thesis to your co-supervisor by the strict deadline of ten days before the date of the graduation session.

You can complete and confirm the documentation online even if some exams have not been taken or recorded. However, to be admitted to the degree examination, you must

  • have obtained all the credits required by the degree programme’s academic regulations
  • that all the examinations in your study plan have been sat and recorded at least 20 days before the graduation date, even if the examination session spans several days. If you have included extracurricular modules, you may graduate even if you have not sat the corresponding exams.

Evaluation

The final graduation grade is the (rounded) sum of:

  • of the weighted average of the grades in hundredths (with specific facilities if you are an internationally mobile student)
  • .
  • of the evaluation of the thesis decided by the committee, normally between 0 and 6 points

The following shall contribute to the committee's assessment:

  • the grade in thirtieths awarded by the Committee of Experts
  • the written dissertation
  • the oral presentation of the thesis
  • 0.5 points additional points(at the supervisor's suggestion) if you did your thesis abroad (international mobility)
  • 0.5 points additional points if you have at least 3 praise
  • 1 point additional if your work is considered excellent (possibly also for advanced mathematical content)

N.B If you have taken exams as part of international mobility agreements, exceeding at least 50% of the CFUs indicated in the Learning Agreement, you can request the exclusion from the calculation of the final average of the lowest grades, corresponding at most to 2/3 of the CFUs obtained abroad.

The final examination is passed if you have obtained a mark of no less than 66 out of 110.

A distinction may be awarded by unanimous decision of the committee if you have obtained a final mark of 110 or above.
