Study plan

What is the study plan

The study plan is the set of all the examinations you need to take in order to graduate.

Your plan includes educational activities, including:

  • teaching
  • laboratories
  • other activities
  • curricular internships

The sum of mandatory and optional activities constitutes your study plan.

If you are a registered student and have paid your fees, you can submit your study plan.

Log in to the online service using your login details and complete your study plan by following the instructions in the handbook.

Once you have selected your modules, you must confirm your proposal.
The status of the proposal must not be ‘draft’. Study plans left as drafts will not be assessed.

If the proposal status is Complete standard study plan: approval by the degree programme board is not required. The plan will be automatically approved and added to your academic record shortly.

If the status of the proposal is Incomplete standard study plan or Individual study plan: the study plan will only be added to your academic record after assessment by the Study Plans Committee and approval by the Degree Programme Board. This procedure takes longer.

ELECTIVE EXAMS: for further information on which curricular teaching activities can be included in your free-choice credits, please consult the degree programme’s Academic Regulations and the Study Guide.

As a general rule, the following are not considered elective modules: work placements, study abroad programmes, laboratories, seminars or assessments which generally do not involve a mark out of thirty but only an assessment such as ‘pass’, ‘suitable’ etc.

As a general rule it is not permitted for students on the three-year degree programme to include, even amongst their free-choice modules, courses offered by Master’s degree programmes.

In the case of modules offered by degree programmes with restricted enrolment, you must request authorisation by contacting the module lecturer in advance.

If you decide to sit elective exams during your Erasmus placement (subject to authorisation on the ‘Learning Agreement’), should these modules not have a corresponding name and code at our University, it is not possible to include them in your study plan; in which case you may confirm the study plan with a lower number of credits (this is flagged whilst completing the form but does not prevent submission) and you must specify, in the NOTES when compiling the study plan, that the elective exam or exams have not been included because they will be attended and sat as part of the Erasmus programme.

Support in compiling the study plan

If you have any difficulties completing the form, you can seek assistance from the tutors and ask the members of the Degree Programme Curriculum Committee for their advice in advance

Please note that:

  • the deadline must be strictly adhered to to avoid the risk of exclusion from the winter session examinations
  • if you have already completed all your modules (180 CFU) in your degree programme, you do not need to complete the study plan, unless you intend to make any changes. In order to amend your study plan, you must be up to date with your fees for enrolment in the new academic year
  • If you expect to graduate by the March examination session, and therefore do not intend to enrol for the new academic year, you cannot submit a new study plan.

Automatic extensions

Your study plan is automatically extended in the following cases:

  • students with outstanding enrolment fees → from the date of payment of the enrolment fee and for 15 days 
  • students who have enrolled late on Master’s programmes → from the date of enrolment and for 15 days 
  • students who pass TE.L.E.MA.CO. in the third or fourth sitting → from the day the TE.L.E.MA.CO. results are imported (typically, the day after the exam) and for 15 days 

Part-time curriculum

If you know you are unable to devote yourself to your studies full-time, you can choose to enrol on a part-time basis, with a reduction in the amount of university fees, corresponding to the part-time category you choose from the following:

Category 1 – up to 15 CFU: pay a fee equal to 25 per cent of the amount due
Category 2 – up to 30 CFU: pay a fee equal to 50 per cent of the amount due

Each year, when you draw up your study plan, you can change your category or decide to return to full-time study.

Part-time enrolment is not permitted if:

  • you have obtained approval for your study plans covering all assessed examinations in your programme of study and the final examination
  • you are submitting a study plan that includes only the final assessment and/or additional extracurricular activities
  • you have distributed the credits required for the degree in an unconventional manner over a number of years equal to the standard duration of the programme

Study plan with recognition of previous career

In the case of enrolment following a decision to recognise examinations as a result of:

  • transfer
  • change from the old to the new degree programme
  • transfer from another university
  • second degree

You will only be able to complete your individual study plan once the Student Registry has sent you the recognition decision. If you miss the deadline for completing your study plan, you will need to apply for a extension from the Student Services Desk (sportello.lettere@unige.it).

The validated modules, as well as any exams included in the resolution as additional academic requirements (i.e. exams to be taken to supplement modules that have been recognised), do not need to be included in your study plan, as they will be added automatically by the Student Registry (studenti.uma@unige.it).

To draw up your study plan, you must first check in the resolution at which year of the programme you have been admitted to (it is in fact possible to be admitted directly to years beyond the first, depending on the total number of recognised credits), then identify, from among the modules scheduled over the three-year period (or two-year period for Master’s programmes), those that have not been recognised. At this point, you are ready to complete your study plan for the current academic year.

Out-of-course and old-order students

If you are studying beyond the standard duration of your degree (with a full study plan of 180 CFU or 120 CFU for Master’s degrees) and wish to make changes to your study plan, you must:

  1. Select the exam or exams included in previous academic years that you wish to remove
  2. Add the replacement modules for the current academic year

N.B. It is not possible to select part-time enrolment.

If you are studying beyond the standard duration of your degree (with a full study plan of 180 CFU or 120 CFU for Master’s degrees) and wish to make changes to your study plan, you must:

  1. Select the exam or exams included in previous academic years that you wish to remove
  2. Add the replacement modules for the current academic year

Change the curriculum

As a general rule, you can amend your study plan during the three designated submission periods.

You will need to access the online submission system, select the modules from previous academic years that you wish to remove, and then add the replacement modules along with all the others scheduled for the new academic year.
Within the same registration window, you can access the system several times to amend your study plan, but only until final confirmation: once the plan is confirmed, you will no longer be able to make changes during that period and will need to wait until the next registration period.

N.B.: you may only request the inclusion of exams outside your programme from the second year of your course onwards. Exams outside your programme do not count towards your average mark. It is not possible to change the type of exam after you have sat it.

Cases of blocking or suspending the curriculum

  • if you are not duly enrolled for the current academic year, you will be prevented from completing your study plan
  • if the annual teaching evaluation questionnaire for the previous academic year has not been completed – this is compulsory for students enrolled on a full-time programme (Degree Programme Questionnaire)
  • if the initial assessment (TE.L.E.MA.CO.) has not been completed, the registration of the first-year study plan will be blocked (if enrolled in the 1st year)
  • If you have failed the OFA exams (assigned as a result of failing the TE.L.E.MA.CO. assessment), you will be prevented from entering your second-year study plan (if enrolled in years beyond the first). You will be enrolled as a “repeat student” in the first year.
